SUPER TYPHOON BART, THE PERFECT STORM -- CAPT AJIT VADAKAYIL




THE PERFECT STORM


In the end of 2000 I went with my wife and two sons for the movie “ The perfect storm “ .

At the end just before the small trawler got engulfed by the massive wave the entire movie hall
including my two children let out a collective gasp.

As we came out from the hall after the movie my elder son , 14 years old at that time, told my
wife “ Daddy was not impressed by the movie “

I heard my wife telling him quietly “ Last year daddy survived a category 5  storm , which is several times bigger “.  My wife has sailed with me for 9 years and she had been through many Category 1 hurricanes , cyclones  and typhoons.

On 19th Sept 1999 my ship was discharging diesel , jet fuel and gasoline at Okinawa islands for the US military base.  

She was a 13 year old 60000 DWT tanker, and we had just 20% cargo balance , when the port shut and all ships including the US base aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and the rest sailed away east into the Pacific to keep maximum distance from the eye of the approaching storm, predicted to grow to a category 5 storm.  (Hurricane Katrina was category 3 – a less powerful one.)



We had 3 days before the storm passed Okinawa.  Initially it appeared that the eye approaching at a direction of NE would pass east of the island , then it appeared that it would pass west . Nothing can be taken for granted for a typhoon, as unlike hurricanes and cyclones else where in the world , typhoons are fickle and can change direction in a unpredictable manner , even take loops.

I had the safety department of my company – about 12 old fogey masters from London eating my head and twisting my arm to sail off east into the pacific with the US navy.  This company was the largest VLCC operator of the world in the seventies ( no names ).

I made a quick risk assessment . My ship’s tall mid ship mast was unsupported without wire stays . The single long derrick could plumb 10 metres outside the hull on both sides.


In the past 13 years the ship had survived several category 1 storms—but this one was special . There was NO time to weld eyes and rig up proper stays . If I sailed out with the existing draft and trim, my ship would slam , and have propeller over speed trips, and do hardly 2 knots with wind from right ahead and swell from beam (as per Buy Ballots law). The cargo tanks could not be ballasted.

I quickly called for a crew muster on the bridge.

I told my crew “ The worst storm ever to hit the pacific is coming and is just 2.5 days away. Company wants us to sail away like how the US fleet has done , but in my opinion our ship will get damaged very badly , the midship mast might fall down and we may sink.  The other option is to use the Okinawa island as a typhoon shelter , where I will offer my ship to the wind , never to the waves . Liquid is NOT compressible while air is.  The decision is yours,  as now this extraordinary situation demands that you partake in this decision where your own lives are in danger”

The crew were too stunned for words.

Then I said “ I plan to stay right here at Okhinawa , which is a perfect natural typhoon shelter with the island as a W shape, with 500 metres high mountains – I must repeat that company has ordered me to sail away with the US fleet .  I know what to do and I  too have a family  waiting for me at home.  All those who trust my judgement and support my decision to stay here, raise your hands. I will monitor everything for the next 3 days personally . I promise you a safe and divine experience. I am competent and confident enough to deal with this situation  ”

That was the quickest raise of hands I have ever seen in my life. 

The decision made and behind me ,  I made a call to the safety department captains in London.

The old captains  , bedded down for retirement,  were already pissed off with me because within 24 hours of taking over command I had sent them a message stating that all past oil record book entries treat port slop tank as the dirty slop and stbd slop as the clean slop ( closed cycle wash ) while it is actually opposite,  as the position of the lower equalizing valve determines which is slop clean and which is dirty. And all of them has inspected the ship and done sailing audits over the past 13 years.  It also proved that the ship and the company had flouted Marpol regulations over 13 years.

The safety dept curtly and rudely ordered me to sail . 

To prevent lengthy arguments , I just told them to FO  “ You are interested in property and insurance . I am interested in lives and cannot betray the trust of my crew.  TA TA BYE BYE , shall talk again after the storm blows over in 3 days time— till then you shall leave me alone.
Then I took the ship to the right side of the W  (see picture ) , assuming that the eye would pass west of Okinawa 35 miles off, and anytime the eye passed east of Okinawa then I would bring my ship to the left of the W in a jiffy . The island is just 60 miles long . 

As per Buy Ballots law the swell comes from the eye , but wind comes 90 degrees to the left in the northern hemisphere. Or conversely stop the ship and face the wind--the eye of the storm ( close by ) will be 90 degrees to your right in the northern hemisphere.
The crew rigged up a comfortable bed for me in the wheelhouse. 

Every 30 minutes I would personally record the direction of wind and swell.   This was to find out if the eye would pass to west of Okinawa or the east.  This was the area where the eye would suddenly pick up speed or unpredictable change direction. 

On 21st 0600 UTC the eye was 200 miles SW of Okinawa, approaching in a NE direction at 7 knots .
To cut a long story short—Okinawa island US naval base has their meteorological station.

They recorded the edge of the eye to have passed 34 miles west of the island with a strength of 262 kilometers / hour winds and barometric pressure of 898 HPa / Millibars at 1200 UTC on 22nd Sept 1999.  
This made super typhoon Bart greater than category 5 on the Saffir Simpson scale , and the strongest typhoon ever recorded in the Pacific. 

The previous one was a category 5 typhoon Vera on Sept 26th  1959 --  less powerful than Bart.  
Vera had killed 5238 people.  But Bart killed just 30 people but destroyed  80000 homes in Japan and caused 4 billion USD in damages.
The night the 10 mile diameter storm eye passes the island to the west, I took my ship outside the right hand side of the W—again to offer my ship only to the wind, never to the waves. 
Every thing outside looked like milky foam. Our ear drums pained due to less atmospheric pressure. Rain was horizontal.  The ship was getting a high pressure wash of compressed air and water. I could see tough epoxy paint getting stripped. 

The anemometer bearings meant for 120 kms/hr winds max –got overheated and disintegrated.
My crew watched  hit Bollywood movies though the storm. 

Once it was established that the hurricane eye would indeed past west of the Island, Chief officer came on bridge and offered to relieve me for a short cat nap. 

I said  " No!, this would be in breach of my promise to the crew that i would personally take take care of everything "
My Chief officer went down and slept through the storm  . 

Next day after the storm passed and was racing for Japan , I asked him  “ Did you get a peaceful sleep?”
He said “ Yes , that is because I trusted your judgement . Other wise I would have informed the London safety dept and deposed you!”
I said “ Son, did you get such inspiring thoughts from the Hollywood movie Crimson Tide ? Thank your stars that you did NOT give me the self inflicted black spot, wrest command from me the way submarine Chief Mate Denzel Washington did to Captain Gene Hackman.  If you remember, there was a show of hands . Our crew trusted the experience and competence of a senior master— they would have just thrown you into the howling winds  , if you had tried anything silly! ”
Well,  my Chief officers face turned white as a sheet .
When your life is in danger, normal rules, regulations and procedures don’t apply. 
When extraordinary situations develop, you require extra ordinary solutions. My solution was based on a 4000 year old Indian story from Panchatantra tales  . It was about a fight between the mountain and the wind, where the mountain won.
Panchatantra was a series of stories based on the varied and exotic wild life in Indian Jungles, basically deep jungle wisdom. Every story has a moral.
I just used the 500 metre high mountain range of Okinawa to beat the wind.  I used nature to beat nature.
Digression: It is is a paradox--when things go beyond a limit you have to use the same medium to fight.  When a oil rig catches fire -- fight fire with fire like Red Adiar—water will not work. Create a second larger fire which will eat up the first fire, and then put off the second fire by remote control.    When your crude oil tanks are too dirty with thick black sludge, you cant wash it with water--you have to do COW , (crude oil wash) with the same medium, and the tanks become amazingly clean.

And when it crosses the Lakshman Rekha , or threshold, the opposite happens. When grief if too much you start to laugh.  If the track is too slippery , mud bikers turn the handle the opposite way. When you travel faster and faster you go ahead in time, and when you cross the speed of light, you go back in time.


Later we came to know that the US aircraft carrier , who sailed away 3 days in advance , had lost planes from the flight deck.  

Such was the power and reach of Super Typhoon Bart.



What were the damages to my ship? Stripped epoxy paint all over due to the water blasting , a gaping hole where the anemometer fan was,  fresh water in each and every external light shade-- that's all--  


--  since the London safety department old fogeys could NOT patronise me, it pissed them off even more. 


And what was the effect of super typhoon Bart on me?  i am unfazed by everything in life-- for no force on earth can match the fury of what i encountered.

THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON STORM CATEGORY SCALE


Storms are measured on the Saffir-Simpson scale depending on wind speed.
1 knot= 1.852 kilometers
Category One - 74-95mph


The main risk at this level is flooding, although winds can be strong enough to blow away unanchored mobile homes and uproot trees.


Category Two - 96-110mph



Winds are strong enough to severely damage mobile homes and lift off roofs, as well as uproot vegetation. They can cause severe flooding.


Category Three - 111-130mph


These are defined as major hurricanes, and can cause severe damage to homes and buildings, entirely wiping out trailer parks.


Category Four - 131-155mph


These can wipe out entire houses and cause extensive inland flooding.
Category Five - 156+ mph


The 'king of hurricanes' damages everything in its wake, with only strong metal buildings more than three miles inland surviving unscathedShips rarely surive to tell the tale.

  3. I remember that storm. I was on Okinawa when that hit, and had to recover the damages from those nasty winds. You have balls of steel Captain. I salute you.

  4. I was a Marine stationed on Futemna Air Base, Okinawa at the time. I remember power being knocked out, our Barracks getting flooded and several parking lots were flooded as well. Trees were flailing around like they were made of paper. All this in an Island that was already well prepared for Typhoons. I couldn't imagine being out at sea for that. Much respect to you!

  12. Amazing experience Captain Cheetan, really your theory of 'Extraordinary decisions at Extra ordinary times' is true and you are a 'Brave Heart'. Not easy to take responsibility and entrust the same in your crew at such situations. So you say that there is going to be one more 'Bart' Cat 5 in Japan. In what category would you classify yesterday's HUDHUD. Also interesting to know that Panchatantra tales have such logic in them, I was of an opinion that they were just fairy tales.     What is special about Tamil Nadu?

    How come it is able to continuously produce word geniuses like Ramanujam, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, C.V. Raman, A.R. Rahman, Abdul Kalam, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Viswanathan Anand, Illayaraja, etc?

    Even till recently the Chief Justice of India, the Finance Minister, the RBI governor are all Tamils?

    Is there any scientific reason behind this? Because no other region has produced such super genius people in such numbers.

    when i was on my training ship in mumbai with 250 other cadets ( two years ) -- the biggest TELUs ( oily and slimy ) and SNEAKS ( snitches ) became SCC ( senior cadet captains ) , CC ( cadet captains ) , CL ( cadet leaders ) etc.

    i used to be in the CAPTAINS MONTHLY BREAKFAST PARTY ( cadet with maximum negative marks for OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES ) -- to be chewed up for breakfast every month .

    i got an EXTRA FIRST in every subject --except OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES.

    now what are OFFICER LIKE QUALITIES-

    being a son of a bit#h, being a sneak, being a hypocrite, being a as$ kisser , being a leader who will sell out his team, being a back biter, being an informer , being the best in playing to the gallery.

    so, so--

    at the passing out parade --most of the cadets who got all PRIXES were leaders -- they all got BOOOOOEEEEED !

    I remember i got only one prize--for being the best REPORTER IN ENGLISH -- the claps I got from the entire hall still resound in my ears -- along with another ROC ( royal officer cadet -who did NOT care to become a sold out leader ).

    and mind you -- i was in every single team which made my TOP ( starboard fore top ) the champion TOP.

    i was a champion sailor, rower, signaller, marks in subjects, soccer team in both years --

    but i lacked OLQ ( officer like qualities ) of being a FU#KIN' SLIME BALL.

    so in my passing our certificate , after two years of training -- i had an EXTRA FIRST in all subjects -- except OLQ where i was third grade

    so i guess they held a special meeting and GRACED ME TO FIRST CLASS --a young 18 year old boy -- .TEE HEEE !

    AT SEA, THE SAILORS DO NOT CARE FOR YOUR FOUR STRIPES- THEY ONLY CARE FOR WHO YOU ARE--

    AT SEA PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME , OR HAVE HEARD OF ME -- OR SAILED WITH ME, WILL VOUCH--

    Dear Captain,

    Yesterday's comments discussion on Computer Science in Vedic Era, was real eye opener.

    I am surprised how detailed things were described on Logic Gates, Natural Language Grammar, Hashing Algorithms etc.

    These modern day discoveries are just improvising these, repackaging & selling.

    Same with missile technologies, all these were there in previous yugas.

    I am pretty sure, we are just repeating things in each yuga, again & again.

    Dear Kapitan, Everytime I read your blog about Christianity, I am surprised, nay, jolted by your statements. If what you wrote about Apollonious and Jesus are true, this will not affect the Christian religion because our beliefs are now embedded in our minds by faith.

    Personally, I would believe your statements and my faith on a 50-50 basis. Your blog is still the most believable on the web. I know that you are anti-Jew, maybe you are right.

    It's is difficult to change overnight. Regards to the family circle.

    THEN I WOULD ADMIT, THAT I MADE A MISTAKE--I ACTUALLY OVER PERFORMED .AND THEN WATCH THE DISMAY ON THEIR COLLECTIVE MANGY FACES .
